This portrait depicts Sarah Knowlton of Darley Dale, England. Upon reading about Paul Holland Knowlton’s service during the Rebellion of 1837, she wrote to him and claimed she was a relative. As their friendship grew, Sarah Knowlton sent large amounts of money to Paul Holland Knowlton to help him develop the town of Coldbrook that changed its name to Knowlton in 1851. Upon her death, Sarah Knowlton bequeathed her fortune to Paul Holland Knowlton.
